Carmelo Abela

Mr. Carmelo Abela is a Maltese politician who since 9th June 2017 has served as the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion. In 1996 Mr. Abela was elected Member of Parliament for the first time and was re-elected in every subsequent election. In this capacity, he served as Opposition Assistant Whip, as well as Cashier and Secretary of the Opposition parliamentary group. In the past Mr. Abela served as Whip of the Government Parliamentary Group. Since 2013 until 2015 he was a Member on the House of Representatives’ Standing Committee on House Business. Between years 2013 and 2016 he was appointed Regional Representative on the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association as well as he was Head of Delegation of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE simultaneously. In 2014 Mr. Abela served as Government Spokesperson at the Office of the Prime Minister. He was appointed Minister for Home Affairs and National Security from 2014 until 2017.
