Jaroslav Kurfürst is a Czech carrier diplomat. He joined the Czech diplomatic service in 1997 and was part of the team working on the accession of Czechia to NATO. After the accession from 1999, he served at the Czech embassy in Moscow where he was responsible for the foreign and security policy of Russia. After the return to Prague, he served as the director of the Security policy department at the MFA. From 2005, he worked as deputy ambassador at the Czech embassy to the United States. From 2009 he was director of the Common Foreign and Security Policy department at the Czech MFA and between 2011 and 2014 he assumed the position of the general director for European affairs. Between 2014 and 2019, he served in Brussels as ambassador of Czechia to Belgium. Currently he works as the Czech Special Envoy for the Eastern partnership. Besides many articles, he published in 2018 the book on Russian geopolitical thought: “The Story of Russian Geopolitics: How the Russian Idea Seized More than a Sixth of the World”.
