Nils Schmid has been a Member of the German Bundestag for the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) since September 2017. He serves as a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. Since 2018, he has been the spokesperson on foreign affairs for the SPD parliamentary group. He also serves as a substitute member of the Committee on Transport and Digital Infrastructure. Additionally, he is a member of the Franco-German Parliamentary Assembly. From 1997 to 2017, Nils Schmid was a Member of the Baden-Württemberg Land Parliament. He became the spokesperson on financial policy for the SPD parliamentary group following his re-election in 2001. In 2006, he was elected as deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. In 2009, he was elected chairman of the Baden-Württemberg Land branch of the SPD by party members, an office he held until 2016. From 2011 to 2016, he served as Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs and as Deputy Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg. Upon his election to the German Bundestag in September 2017, he resigned his seat in the Baden-Württemberg Land Parliament. Nils Schmid studied law at the University of Tübingen from 1994 to 1998 and passed the first state examination in law in 1999. He subsequently completed the compulsory period of practical legal training and passed the second state examination in law in 2001. In 2006, he completed his doctoral thesis, supervised by Professor Ferdinand Kirchhof, on “Public Facility Management, Public Debt, and Public Property” (summa cum laude). Nils Schmid also holds several honorary posts, especially in the fields of arts and culture, international understanding and social cohesion. Among other things, he is a member of the executive committee of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) and the council of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP). Furthermore, he is a member of the executive committee of the Franco-German Institute (DFI) and sits on the advisory board of the Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS). He is also a member of the board of the German-Arab Friendship Association (DAFG) and the board of the “Friends and Supporters of Wilhelma Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt e.V.”, and chairman of the board of trustees of the Arts Foundation Baden-Württemberg.
