Jim Stokes became the NATO Director of Nuclear Policy in November 2023. He is responsible for developing and implementing NATO nuclear policy, organizing exercises, policy symposiums, training programs and providing policy support to Secretary General on nuclear deterrence. Mr. Stokes chairs the Nuclear Planning Group - Staff Group. Prior to NATO, Mr. Stokes had a long career within the U.S. Department of Defense, holding positions in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Naval Special Warfare Command, and the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He has earned Master’s degrees from the National War College and the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy, as well as a B.A. from Allegheny College.
