Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya is the National Leader of Belarus and President-elect, recognized by independent observers as the winner of the August 9, 2020, presidential election against the long-standing dictator Aliaksandr Lukashenka. She entered the race after her husband, Siarhei Tsikhanousky, was arrested for his political aspirations. Following her forced exile, Tsikhanouskaya united and led the democratic coalition, inspiring unprecedented peaceful protests in Belarus. When the full-scale invasion of Russia started, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya announced the anti-war movement to prevent the participation of Belarus in the war against Ukraine. Mass campaigns of disobedience and dozens of acts of sabotage took place aimed at stopping Russian troops from entering Ukraine from Belarus territory. Tsikhanouskaya has visited 28 countries, advocating for the release of over 1500 political prisoners and a peaceful transition of power through free elections.
