Why is the Wargaming simulation important for NATO, and what are the potential outcomes?

  • Published: September 9, 2017

According to the opinion of many experts on security and defense issues, the Wargaming exercises are extremely important. Notably, they help in the development of a regional and generally NATO’s understanding of the nature of the Russian military threat to the Baltic States and Poland. Indeed, Baltic countries and Sweden are already employing the Hegemon Baltic Campaign exercises in order to identify force structure and defense planning requirements for defeating Russian General Staff plans for the occupation of the Baltic States and disintegration of the European Union as well as the Alliance.

In particular, Dr. Phillip Karber, President of the influential US-based think tank the Potomac Foundation, underlined after his participation in the firstly organized in Poland War Game earlier this year: “Together with the General Philip Breedlove we believe that the preparation for the potential threat from Russia is extremely important for the Alliance and its front states”. Dr. Karber adds: These kinds of exercises are not about drawing specific conclusions, they’re about giving us different problems that force us to think about how to handle them, therefore delivering a framework”. Other attendees of the January Wargaming exercise note also a financial advantage of such simulation. Particularly, British Brigadier General Paul Tennant, Chief Joint Fires and Influence with NATO, emphasized that War Games allow the military to learn things in the “non-expensive way”, especially when it comes to what governments should purchase, as was also noted by General Breedlove.

The organizers of the War Game believe that the realistic simulation with the attendance of military experts is an extremely effective tool for the analysis of the military challenges for NATO and its member-states.
