WSF2019 | TRANSATLANTIC DISCUSSION: John Garamendi – Radosław Sikorski

  • Published: June 6, 2020

The discussion between Mr. John Garamendi, Member of the US House of Representatives from California and Mr. Radosław Sikorski, Member of European Parliament, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland (2007 – 2014) was moderated by Ms. Katarzyna Pisarska, Program Director of the Warsaw Security Forum. The panel aimed to debate the impact of recent events on transatlantic relations. The panel took place on October 3, 2019.
The first topic concerned the Trump administration’s commitment to NATO following the Helsinki Summit. Minister Sikorski underlined the huge importance for European countries of maintaining a great relationship with the US President, since he is the only one with the capacity to “match [Russia] in entering on the ladder of nuclear escalation”. Congressman Garamendi was more cautious. He warned that nuclear war is “the end of everything”. He explained to the audience that a new nuclear arms race had been launched between China, Russia, and the United States. Other topics discussed include the Iranian crisis and the trade war between China and the United States.
