Jim Stokes became the Director of Nuclear Policy in November 2023. He is responsible for developing and implementing NATO nuclear policy, organizing exercises, and providing decision support to the Secretary General and Allied leaders on all aspects of nuclear deterrence. He chairs the Nuclear Planning Group - Staff Group. He also oversees NATO's CBRN defence policies, plans, and capabilities, to ensure NATO Allies develop and field effective capabilities against weapons of mass destruction.
Prior to NATO, Mr. Stokes had a long career within the U.S. Department of Defense, holding positions in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Naval Special Warfare Command, and the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.
He has earned Master’s degrees from the National War College and the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy, as well as a B.A. from Allegheny College.
