Dr Johann David Wadephul has been the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs since 6 May 2025.
Prior to that, he was Deputy Chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the German Bundestag responsible for foreign and defence policy. From 2010 to 2021, he was a member of the Federal Executive Committee of the CDU. He has been a Member of the German Bundestag since 2009 and previously worked as a lawyer. From 1982 to 1986, he had a short-service engagement in the Federal Armed Forces and has held the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the reserve since July 2023.
He is married and has three daughters.
