Rafael Mariano Grossi

Director General, International Atomic Energy Agency

Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi is a diplomat with nearly 40 years of experience in non-proliferation and disarmament. He has served as Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since 2019.

Before his election, he was president-designate of the 2020 NPT Review Conference and twice president of the Nuclear Suppliers Group. In 2015, he chaired the Diplomatic Conference of the Convention on Nuclear Safety, achieving the Vienna Declaration on Nuclear Safety.

Mr. Grossi has held senior roles in the Argentine Foreign Service and at international organizations, including Ambassador to Austria, Assistant Director General at the IAEA, and Chief of Cabinet at the OPCW. He joined Argentina’s Foreign Ministry in 1985.

An International Gender Champion, he holds a PhD and Master’s in International Relations and History from the Graduate Institute in Geneva, as well as degrees from the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina and the Diplomatic Academy of Argentina.

He has received numerous national honors and international awards, including Brazil’s Order of Naval Merit, Austria’s Grand Decoration of Honour, Italy’s Order of Merit, Paraguay’s Orden Nacional al Mérito Comuneros, and the Henry DeWolf Smyth Nuclear Statesman Award. He also holds multiple honorary degrees from universities worldwide.
