Born in 1976. Studied at École Nationale d’Administration (ENA, Paris, France), the European University Institute (EUI, Florence, Italy), the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE, London, UK) and Ecole des Hautes Études Commerciales, (HEC, Paris, France).
Xavier Chatel was admitted into the Foreign Service in 2004. He was first responsible for NATO and European Defense at the Foreign Ministry’s Strategic Directorate (2004-2007). He was then posted to the French Permanent Representation to the United Nations in New York, as a negotiator on Iran, DPRK, nuclear non proliferation, disarmement, and the war in Georgia (2007-2010). Subsequently he served at the French Embassy in London, as Political Adviser (2010-2012), then as Embassy Spokesperson (2012-2014).
He was then appointed as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs at the Foreign Ministry (2014-2017). From May 2017 to August 2020, he served as diplomatic adviser to Florence Parly, the Minister for the Armed Forces. Between September 2020 and October 2022, he served as Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. In June 2022, he was awarded the distinction of Knight in the Order of Merit. In October 2022, he was appointed as Advisor for Strategic Affairs in President Macron’s diplomatic team.
