A Labour Member of Parliament for Doncaster North since 2005, previously served as Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition from 2010 to 2015, during which he reformed party leadership election rules to a "one member, one vote" system. Extensive ministerial experience includes serving as Minister for the Third Sector, Minister for the Cabinet Office, and two tenures as Energy Secretary — first under Gordon Brown from 2008 to 2010 and later under Keir Starmer from 2024 to 2026.
Born in London to Polish-Jewish immigrant parents, studied at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and the London School of Economics. Before entering parliament, worked as a television journalist, Labour Party researcher, visiting scholar at Harvard University, and Chairman of HM Treasury's Council of Economic Advisers.
