American public policy strategist, defense specialist, and financial executive with extensive experience in federal legislative oversight, national security policy, public administration, and corporate finance.
His career in public service encompasses serving in the U.S. Senate representing Michigan (since 2015), holding leadership and committee roles across the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the Armed Services Committee, the Appropriations Committee, and the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee. Before his election to the Senate, he served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and in the Michigan State Senate, as well as managing state enterprise as Michigan State Lottery Commissioner. His military service includes over a decade in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist, deploying overseas following September 11 and achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Prior to entering public administration, he worked for over 20 years in corporate finance and investment management, holding senior executive roles at Merrill Lynch and UBS/PaineWebber.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Alma College, a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School, a Master of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Detroit Mercy, a Master of Arts in Political Science from Wayne State University, and a Master of Arts in Philosophy from Michigan State University. He also earned a diploma from the College of Naval Command and Staff at the U.S. Naval War College.
