An American military officer, corporate executive, author, and strategic policy advisor who retired as a four-star general after 38 years of service in the United States Army.
His military career culminated in senior joint assignments as Commander of U.S. Southern Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe / Commander of U.S. European Command, where he led NATO forces to victory in Operation Allied Force, saving 1.5 million Albanians from ethnic cleansing through a 78-day air campaign, ground planning, and diplomatic engagement.
A West Point graduate who finished first in his class and earned degrees in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, his service includes commanding an infantry company in combat during the Vietnam War, where he was severely wounded, as well as holding battalion, brigade, and division commands. In staff leadership roles, including Director of Strategic Plans and Policy (J-5), he was the principal author of both the U.S. National Military Strategy and Joint Vision 2010, and worked alongside Ambassador Richard Holbrooke in writing and negotiating key sections of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement.
His decorations include the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the 2024 West Point Distinguished Graduate Award, and honorary knighthoods from foreign governments.
Following his military retirement, he transitioned into executive leadership, higher education, and international policy analysis, serving as Chairman and CEO of Wesley K. Clark & Associates, Chairman and Founder of Enverra, Inc., and Chairman of Energy Security Partners, LLC. Active across energy sectors, finance, and security, he has advised or served on the boards of over ninety companies, sits as a Senior Fellow at UCLA's Burkle Center for International Relations and Director of the Atlantic Council, founded non-profit initiatives including Renew America Together, and authored four best-selling books.
