An Italian statesman and diplomat who serves as the European Union Special Representative for the Gulf region, a position held since June 2023.
His executive experience in national government includes serving as Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2019 to 2022, as well as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development, Labour, and Social Policies from 2018 to 2019. In the Italian Parliament, he served as Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies beginning in 2013. Throughout his public service, he has chaired international high-level summits, including three editions of the Mediterranean Dialogues, G20 foreign and trade ministerial meetings, the 2021 Ministerial Meeting of the Global Coalition against Daesh, and the inaugural Mediterranean Ministerial Dialogue on the Food Security Crisis.
His academic and policy contributions include an appointment as an Honorary Professor at King's College London and membership on the Council of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR).
