His media career spans nearly two decades as a principal news presenter for BBC World News from 1996 to 2014, following 18 years at ITN, where he served as Diplomatic Editor for Channel 4 News and received a BAFTA in 1982 for his reporting on martial law in Poland.
He serves as a Distinguished Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), having previously served on the councils of RUSI and Chatham House, as a member of the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on Geo-Economics, and as an adviser to the President of the UN General Assembly.
He holds visiting professorships at King's College London and Nanyang Technological University, authored the 2009 study Skyful of Lies and Black Swans, and holds honorary doctorates from the University of Exeter and the University of Bristol.
