Daniel Fried helped design and implement U.S. policy in response to the end of the Soviet empire in Europe and the Soviet Union itself, including the achievement of a Europe whole and free instead of the "Yalta Europe" of the Cold War. Among other assignments in his 40-years as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, Fried served as Ambassador to Poland, Special Assistant to Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, and Sanctions Coordinator in the Department of State.
