Carmelo Abela

Carmelo Abela studied in the field of Labor Studies at the University of Malta. In 1990 he was an employee at HSBC Bank Malta. In 1994-1996, he served as the Councilor in the Zejtun Local Council. In 1996, Carmelo was elected as a Member of Parliament and he has been consistently re-elected in every subsequent election. He also served as Assistant Treasurer and as the Government Whip in the Parliament of Malta. 

In 2013-2015, he was a member of the House of Representatives’ Standing Committee on House Business. In 2013-2016, he served as Regional Representative on the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, as well as the Head of Delegation of Inter-Parliamentary Union and Member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE. In 2014, he became the Minister for Home Affairs and National Security and simultaneously served as the Government Spokesperson at the Office of the Prime Minister. 

In 2017 he was elected Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion.
